backpacking Warrnambool
Located 264km from Melbourne and with a population of 26,000, Warrnambool is the major town along the southwest coast. It is mainly a commercial and industrial town, but does still have a relaxed seaside feel about it. There are some nice beaches around the town, which are good for surfing and swimming. During the months from May to October, you may also be able to see the migration of the Southern Right Whales. A lot of the history of the town is linked to the sea and the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum is a great place to experience some of this history. There are original buildings, a lighthouse and a recreated port, complete with ships.

There are also many great walking tracks near the town where you can experience secluded beaches, rocky outcrops, fairy penguin colonies and other wildlife. Several kilometres from the town is the Tower Hill State Game Reserve, located here is an ancient volcanic crater with a lake and lava tongue. There are great walking tracks in this reserve where you can experience the unique surrounding flora and fauna. Other activities include enjoying the adventure playground of Lake Pertobe, visiting Hopkins Falls and experiencing the local art scene and events that take place during the year.
