backpacking Wangaratta
This provincial town, population 15,500 sits at the junction of the Ovens and King River's. The Great Alpine Road leaves Wangaratta and heads towards Mt Buffalo and the northern ski resorts of the High Country. Wangaratta is a good base for exploring Victoria’s alpine country, and for local interest, has an aviation museum at the airport. The Wangaratta Jazz Festival is one of Australia’s premier music festivals and is held on the weekend before the Melbourne Cup in November. Nearby is Glenrowen, which is where the bloody siege and capture of the Kelly Gang (lead by Ned kelly) occurred. This stands as perhaps the most famous episode of bushranger history in Australia and there are many attractions in this town that preserve this event.
