Queensland's fourth largest city with a population around 110,000 is primarily residential and industrial. It is the main access point for Magnetic Island or to go diving at the world-famous Yolanga Wreck. Townsville houses an impressive aquarium, which has a huge main tank containing a living coral reef, hundreds of reef fish, sharks and other marine life. Recent redevelopment of the Flinders Street and Palmer Street Heritage Areas has given the city centre a lift. Townsville is more a transportation hub for backpackers than a tourist destination. |
