The Snowy Mountains forms part of the Great Dividing Range. The region starts close to Canberra and goes down to straddle the New South Wales and Victorian border. The area contains Kosciuszko National Park, which houses Australia’s highest mainland summit - Mt Kosciuszko. The park has year round attractions for tourists and visitors, with skiing, cross country skiing and snowboarding in winter and incredibly beautiful bushwalking and hiking trails in summer. Other activities such as white-water rafting and horse riding can also be undertaken during the summer months.

Jindabyne is one of the main towns in the region with a population of around 4,300. It is located on the shores of the man-made Lake Jindabyne and is 56 km west of Cooma. Visitors can swim and rent boats in summer and visit the ski fields 25 km away in winter.

Thredbo is located right in the middle of the ski fields. It is not only home to the longest ski runs in Australia, but it is also an entertainment centre and considered by many to be the country’s premier ski resort. Unlike most other ski resorts in the Snowies, Thredbo does not close down in the off-peak season and there are plenty of summer activities to keep visitors occupied.

Perisher Blue is the regions other premier resort, which actually combines four resorts. Perisher Valley, Smiggins, Blue Cow and Guthega. Other places worth visiting, include the Yarrangobilly Caves, this is a network of underground caves, complete with a natural thermal pool. There is also Lake Eucumbene, another fine lake for fishing and other water sports.
