The busy Port Hedland is primarily concerned with industry. From here, the enormous amounts of iron ore mined from the Pilbara are shipped overseas. Port Hedland was already prominent before the Marble Bar gold rush of the 1880’s and has a history including grazing and pearling. Today the town’s population of 13,000 is mostly interested in industry. The town is more of a pit-stop on the way to other places.
