The once sleepy coastal town of Port Douglas, population 3600, was once a rival town to Cairns in the gold rush days. It was awakened in the 1980’s when big developers moved in and built a number of upscale resorts and hotels. The town has managed to retain its local charm however, and caters to big and small budget travellers and offers a wide variety of accommodation for both. |

The drive to Port Douglas from Cairns takes around 40 minutes and is quite beautiful as it hugs the coast. From the newly developed marina, you can take boats and catamarans out to the Great Barrier Reef. There are a number of delightful restaurants in town with prices covering the full spectrum. |
