Penola is a historic town located at the southern end of the Coonawarra/Penola wine district just under 400 km from Adelaide and 50 km from Mt Gambier. North of the town lies the famous terra rossa soils which have produced excellent red wines for the last century. The town is also famous for being the central location in the life of Mary McKillop, Australia's first saint.

There are great opportunities for backpackers to work in the surrounding vineyards of Penola and Eagles Nest Accommodation provides backpacker dormitory style accommodation for those wishing to work or enjoy the area.
