In 1896 a fierce storm split the land mass known as Stradbroke Island in two. Today, South Stradbroke Island is virtually uninhabited but North Stradbroke Island has a permanent population and is still relatively unspoiled. The most popular town to visit is Point Lookout, which is located on the northeast corner of the island and has some great surfing beaches adjacent to the township. |

The island is a water sports paradise with swimming and surfing beaches and some great lakes to explore. It is a sand island and even though heavy sand mining has taken place, there is still plenty of natural bushland to be found.
