This large rural town, population 27,000 is the site of the first Murray River irrigation projects. Mildura is located next to the Murray River in the far northwest corner of Victoria. The town is the main commercial centre for the region and offers somewhat of an oasis to the dry and desolate landscape that is evident the further away from the river you go. The main reason why backpackers come to Mildura is because of the fruit picking work available, which is mainly between January to March, but there is work available all year round. There are also several main festivals throughout the year, including the Jazz and Wine Festival in November, Arts Festival in February and March and the Country Music Festival in September. |

Mildura is also a great base to explore the mysterious sand dunes of Mungo National Park or the amazing Mallee region with its abundant wildlife, amazing sunsets and rugged outback scenery. Other activities include riding on a paddle steamer up the Murray River or visiting nearby wineries. |
