The city of Mackay has a population around 74,000 and sits along the south bank of the Pioneer River. It is responsible for growing and processing a third of Australia’s sugar crop. Mackay is used as a gateway to the nearby Eungella National Park which contains the popular Finch Hatton Gorge. This spectacular area consists of waterfalls, freshwater swimming holes and great walking tracks.

The Great Barrier Reef is also just off the coast. There are many beaches suitable for swimming around Mackay, the better ones are located about 15kms north of the city.
