The city of Lismore with a population of around 42,000 is located 35 km inland from Ballina on the Wilson River. There are three World Heritage listed rainforest and volcanic remains near the city. The city also has a strong Aboriginal presence and heritage. Lismore houses the Southern Cross University and because of this student population, there are some good funky, cheap cafes to eat at, and some lively pubs to spend an evening.
