backpacking Launceston
Founded in 1805, Launceston is Tasmania’s second largest city with a population of 68,000, and Australia’s third oldest city. The city is the commercial centre of northern Tasmania and sits on the location where the North and South Esk River's join to form the Tamar River. One of Launceston’s most popular tourist destinations is Cataract Gorge, only a ten minute walk from the city centre. Here vertical cliffs line the South Esk River as it enters the Tamar. The area has been made a wildlife preserve and at night is lit up to provide a breathtaking scene.
