Located just off the mainland coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula, Kangaroo Island is Australia’s third largest island. At a little over 150km long and 30km wide, the island has a resident population of around 4,000, most of whom live in the main town of Kingscote. In its early days of European settlement, Kangaroo Island was home to sealers, whalers and escaped convicts, but today it is a popular summertime escape for those wishing to avoid the usual packed mainland tourist spots. Kangaroo Island is accessible by ferry and plane, but once on the island there is no public transport and most of the roads are unsealed. Kangaroo Island offers good swimming, surf beaches, and some great fishing. There are also lots of native wildlife to see, such as the kangaroos, sea-lions and penguins. Also off the coast, are some shipwrecks, which are good for scuba diving.
