If you are planning to backpack Hobart, then this page provides information on what backpacker hostels and backpacker tours and attractions are available here. The page also provides a description of Hobart, information on how to get here and contact details of the local visitor information centre.
Hobart is the capital of Tasmania and was founded in 1804 as a convict site where the worst of the British and colonial criminals were sent. Hobart straddles two banks of the Derwent River and is backed onto by Mt Wellington. Today there are many reminders of the city’s penal history and many of the fine old buildings built in that time are still standing. There are over 90 historic buildings in Hobart that are listed by the National Trust. Hobart has all but missed the explosive growth of the mainland capital cities and has a relatively small population of 130,000. This has helped the city retain a great deal of its charm and beauty, without the normal urban sprawl and hustle. The city is quite compact and easy to get around and MT Wellington provides some truly spectacular views of the city and surrounding countryside. In the last week of every year, the Sydney to Hobart yacht race fires the city up into a festive mood, but for most of the year, visitors can relax and enjoy the history, charm and great hospitality that Hobart has to offer.
