backpacking Hervey Bay

The city of Hervey Bay, which has a population of around 40,000, is the major stepping off point to Fraser Island and Lady Elliot Island. It has developed into quite a tourist town, due to Fraser Islands growing popularity. It is also famous for whale watching, where up to 3,000 humpback whales enter the bay each year between August and October on the return leg of their annual migration.

The city puts on the Whale festival for the first two weeks in August to celebrate this. Plenty of organised tours are available to visit Fraser Island or to go whale watching. The bay is great for many watersports, including swimming, diving, wind surfing, snorkelling and water and jet skiing.
