The Gold Coast stretches 35km from Coolangatta on the New South Wales/Queensland border to Southport in the north. Originally comprising a series of beautiful individual surf beaches and towns, rapid commercialisation since the Second World War has seen the joining of these villages to form one large region. The Gold Coast city has a permanent population of around 390,000 but this rises to 1.2 million every summer as Australian and overseas tourists flock to the area. |

Coolangatta airport at the southern end is the main entry point for visitors to the coast, but it is also only a 45 minute drive south from Brisbane airport. |
|
Although the whole region has tourist appeal, the main hub of the Gold Coast is Surfers Paradise. Here is where the greatest concentration of high-rise apartments, restaurants and nightlife are located.
The often overlooked Gold Coast hinterland has many charming rustic towns and rain forested national parks and you will find this a stark contrast to the brashness of the coastline. |

In addition to the appeal of nature’s wonders and the nightlife, the Gold Coast also has three large and easily accessible theme parks. Sea World is located on the Spit in Main Beach and is the longest running of the theme parks. The main attractions are the animal performances and some thrilling rides.
|
“Hollywood on the Gold Coast” is how Warner Brothers Movie World advertises itself to the public. As well as being a fully equipped movies studio where feature films have been produced, it is also a theme park along the lines of Americas Universal Studios with rides and shows.
A couple of kilometres north of Movie World is Dreamworld. This is a Disneyland style theme park with many different theme areas. There are many other smaller attractions for people with different tastes and speeds including Wet ‘N’ Wild, a large water theme park. |
