The town of Geraldton, population 25,000, is the major town in the mid-west and is the self-proclaimed crayfish capital of the world. Geraldton is situated on a rugged, wind swept stretch of coast 421kms north of Perth, and has a good all year round climate. The city is host to hundreds of tourists, particularly windsurfers, who flock into town every summer, but the city actually relies more on its busy port, fishing, mining and agriculture than on tourism for its survival. There are some interesting sights in and around town, including the Houtman Abrolhos Islands off the coast, the Murchison River Gorges and the Kalbarri National Park. |
