Located 53 km north of Launceston, with a population of 5,000, George Town is one of the most important historic sites in northeastern Tasmania. The town is one of the earliest settlements in Tasmania, in 1804 William Paterson camped on the site and by 1811, a permanent settlement had been established. Today, George Town is an administrative centre to the surrounding region. It is economically driven by the aluminium industry and the tourist industry, which brings people to this attractive area of northern Tasmania.
