backpacking Flinders Ranges

This vast region starts at Gulf St Vincent and runs north for 400km into the arid outback. The Flinders Ranges has some of the most spectacular and rugged scenery in South Australia. The region is ideal for bushwalking and exploring the abundant wildlife and diverse vegetation. Wilpena Pound, the Arkaroola-Mt Painter Wildlife Sanctuary and Mt Remarkable have all got great walking tracks to explore this great scenery.

The region includes several small towns that provide backpacker accommodation and a good base to explore the ranges.

Quorn

Population 1000, located 330km north of Adelaide, is the self proclaimed gateway to the Flinders, with the Flinders Ranges National Park to the north of the town.

Melrose
This is a tiny town with a population of 200 people. It is 265km north of Adelaide and lies in beautiful surrounds next to Mt Remarkable. MT Remarkable is also a national park and visitors can undertake some great bushwalks or venture into the Alligator Gorge.

Peterborough
Driving north from Clare and Burra, Peterborough is the first town on the way to Flinders. It is mainly an agricultural service town but it does have several historic attractions.

Wirrabara
This town is also located near the Flinders Ranges.
