backpacking Canberra
Canberra lies within the Australian Capital Territory and is the nations capital. The city has a population of 314,000 and was conceived, designed and built in the 20th century. When the separate colonies of Australia formed a federation, Canberra was built to serve as the nations capital. The city is fascinating because it has been meticulously planned and built. The centrepiece that divides the city into north and south is Lake Burley Griffin, a man made lake named after the American architect who won an international competition to design the city.

The city has unique architecture and is home to many great places worth visiting. Some of these include the National Gallery of Australia, which is one of the world's youngest and most respected galleries. There is the Australian War Memorial, which is an outstanding military museum and gallery, presenting conflicts from the Boer War to Vietnam. It also serves as a memorial to the 102,000 Australians who have died in war.
The National Museum of Australia is devoted to the stories of Australia and Australians. It explores the evolution of the country from its beginnings until now, with a significant part dedicated to issues of Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The Questacon National Science and technology Centre, is where you can experience hands-on, interactive science and technology exhibits in five different galleries. The National Capital Exhibition explains the extraordinary story of Canberra through interactive displays.
