Backpacking Blue Mountains
The Blue Mountains are part of the Great Dividing Range, which stem from the western sprawl of the Sydney suburbs. There are many towns lying within the Blue Mountains region. Most of these are relatively small and quaint.

Katoomba is the main town, with a population of around 18,000. It is a drawcard for tourists visiting from the Sydney area. From this town there is ample opportunities for hiking, bushwalking and to visit the famous Three Sisters rock formation.

The town itself has a charming otherworldly, alternate ambience from its art deco cafes and guesthouses, to its funky shops and yoga and meditation centres. Katoomba’s location in the Blue Mountains provides it with a more temperate climate to Sydney, with occasional snowfall in the winter and mild summers.

There are three National Parks in the area. Blue Mountains National Park, which offers great bushwalking, spectacular scenery and views, great rock climbing and some magnificent waterfalls. Wollemi National Park is the largest forested wilderness area in New South Wales. This park has limited accessibility due to its rugged landscape. Kanangra-Boyd National Park is also great for bushwalking, there is the spectacular Kanangra Walls Plateau, which gives amazing scenic views of the sheer cliffs and surrounding countryside.

Also located in this park, is Australia’s most famous limestone caves; the Jenolan Caves. Here you can take guided tours exploring these amazing limestone formations.
