Fishing is the major industry in the tiny town of Bicheno. The town was originally a whaling and sealing port and provided good shelter from the wild coast in the protected harbour called the ‘Gulch’. Tourism is becoming increasingly important to Bicheno and the surrounding countryside can offer bushwalking and swimming in a quiet, uncluttered environment. Apsley National Park is nearby, where you can see some great scenery, including waterfalls, gorges, eucalypt forest and the local wildlife. Also nearby is the Governors Island Marine Reserve, here you can explore the fascinating underwater scenery and sealife.
