The locals affectionately know this sandy island about 19km off the coast from Fremantle as "Rotto". It is 11km long and 4.5km wide and is home to the very unusual Quokkas. These small wallabies were originally mistaken as rats by Dutch explorer William de Vlamingh in 1697, which he named “Rats Nest” Island. Originally established as a prison for Aboriginals in 1838, the prison was abandoned in 1903. Today, Rottnest is a haven for locals and tourists alike who want to escape the city and relax by swimming, sunbaking, fishing, walking, cycling and quokka spotting.
