backpacking Fremantle
Fremantle was a relatively sleepy and historically preserved port until 1987. It was then that Fremantle geared up for Australia’s unsuccessful defence of the America’s Cup. In the lead up to this, there was massive building and renovation undertaken on the towns accommodations and facilities. The explosion of tourism has woken Fremantle up and made it a vibrant coastal city. As with Perth, convicts were brought in as a labour force to construct many of Fremantle’s fine old buildings, but the town did not really flourish as a port until an artificial harbour was constructed in the 1890’s. Fremantle now has a fantastic cafe society and is well worth the visit to soak up the atmosphere while in Perth. It is also the place where you can get boat transport to Rottnest Island. Other activities to do in Fremantle include visiting the Batavia shipwreck in the maritime museum, doing a ghost walk or a tour through the former Fremantle Prison, or exploring the historic streetscape on tram, cart, horse or by foot.
