backpacking Alice Springs

The town of Alice Springs has a population of around 27,000. It is nestled in a break in the MacDonnell Ranges, which has been carved out by the Todd River. The Alice was originally established as a staging point for the development of the overland telegraph line. Then when the Ghan rail link between Adelaide and Alice Springs was developed and the sealing of the Sturt highway was completed during World War II, Alice Springs began to grow, and now it is a thriving large town.

Outside of Alice Springs, there are a great number of places you can visit within a day. The scenery in the MacDonnell Ranges is excellent. Gorges and water holes can be reached on foot or by car and spending some time alone outside of the town can really make you appreciate the tranquility of the Red Centre.
Other activities you can do, include a visit to the Royal Flying Doctor Service or the School of the Air, explore the new Desert Park, which features unique ways to experience the arid zone's flora and fauna, or you can even take a camel tour. If you are in Alice in late September, don't miss the Henley-on-Todd Regatta. This unusual, fun event attracts large crowds of people to see the boats race in a river without water.
